Sometime early Monday, not so long after the Ottawa RedBlacks game ended on Sunday night, 16 tractor trailers wheeled into TD Place, loaded with steel.

AC/DC’s vanguard had arrived.

The trucks — only 16 of 26 that move the Rock or Bust tour across the continent — were loaded with the steel frame and foundation of the stage that’ll be used at Thursday’s sold-out show at TD Place. It takes 44 hours to build the stage, says production manager Dale “Opie” Skjerseth, who took a break Wednesday to tell local media how it all comes together.

The stage is one of three — on Wednesday the others were in Moncton and Detroit — that leap frog across North America. Each has a main playing area that’s 101 feet wide. A wing sticks out another 100 feet or so on each side, and hanging over the wings will be so many speakers that they’ll look like bunches of grapes.

How many watts from all those speakers?

“I’ll just put it this way,” Skjerseth said. “We have five trucks of PA — just PA. Five trucks of speaker boxes.” AC/DC, he added, “wants the big sound. And it is big.”
