Robe BMFL Spot en el Rock or Bust tour - AC/DC
![]() |
| Robe en el tema "Let There Be Rock" |
Another amazing raw, industrial production design by Ray Winkler of Stufish is complimented by an equally inspired and dramatic rock lightshow created by Patrick Woodroffe of Woodroffe Bassett Design (WBD) … with a little help from 39 x Robe BMFLs.
The BMFL Spots are in three key locations on the stage.
Detalles
The first batch of fixtures are rigged on an upstage arch of trussing – the arch and ten trussing ‘fingers’ are an integral set element - where they are equally spaced apart and utilised for massive beams and powerful breakup / gobo looks.
They were chosen for their brightness and reliability.
The next position is far upstage on the floor behind the ‘chicken run’ which is an up-and-over riser on which the band whizz about. These BMFLs are the primary fixtures in the reveal of the famous AC/DC cannons that emerge ominously at the start of “For Those about to Rock (We Salute You)”.
The same fixtures are also used to up-light the huge inflatable Rosie character which bursts into life and takes over the stage for the AC/DC anthem “Whole Lotta Rosie” … Rosie has been a feature of the band’s live performances since 1990 … and the song intro also spawned the famous “AN-gus” chant from fans, that since 1978 has become absolute tradition at their raucous live shows!
The next BMFL position is above the left and right delay side screens. Six units a side blast out across the audience, reaching up into the air for those mega looks that shoot the energy and the excitement coming off stage right into the atmosphere and to the back of the venue.
They are also perfectly positioned to highlight Angus as he rises up above the crowds on a big circular satellite dish hydraulic lift at the end of the thrust … complete with full-on guitar mayhem!
Terry Cook, Patrick’s lighting Associate Designer for the project explained that he and Patrick chose BMFLs because they wanted ‘impact fixtures’ with “Enough fire power” to stand up against the rest of the rig and the FOH 4000w follow spots … but a luminaire that was also lightweight and user-friendly.
WBD has used BMFLs on a few other shows this year including Rock in Rio, Las Vegas.
The lighting vendor worldwide is Chicago-based Upstaging, who invested in more BMFL Spots specifically for the tour, and delivered by Robe Lighting Inc.
Upstaging’s account handler for the tour is John Huddleston. Lighting was programmed by Dave Hill and Pryderi Baskerville and lighting director / operator on the road is Charlie ‘Cosmo’ Wilson.
‘Rock or Bust’ kicked off in Europe in April following 10 days of full technical production rehearsals at the GelreDome in Arnhem, the Netherlands, and the tour will rock to its hell-and-hair raising conclusion in Australia and New Zealand in December.

“Rock or Bust tour 2015”
GrandMA2 rides with the hard rock gods AC/DC
Giant riffs and lyrics about sex, drinking and damnation are the formula that made AC/DC one of the biggest hard-rock bands in music history. Starting in the 70s the Australians have conquered the globe since that time. Having sold more than 200 million records worldwide, including 71.5 million albums in the United States alone, they are the tenth-best-selling band in the United States and one of the world's best-selling bands of all time.
Classics like “Highway to Hell”, “For Those About to Rock”, “Thunderstruck” or “Hells Bells” are not only anthems for their fans but are known to everybody that even once in a while listens to music. Now AC/DC are back with their “Rock or Bust” World Tour to show - one more time - that they have earned their place amongst the “rock gods”.
Lighting designer and show director Patrick Woodroffe is again the creative mastermind for the tour design, for which lighting director Cosmo Wilson specified 2 x grandMA2 full-size consoles for control. Woodroffe explained his design ideas: “I wanted to create a big, large scale rock concert to fill the end of a stadium. Therefore I selected a tough, strong, ballsy lighting for this tough strong band!”
Wilson commented on the grandMA2: “I am using the grandMA2 because I have had such success using the grandMA ‘series 1’ for the past ten years and I decided it was time for me to upgrade to the grandMA2. The learning curve was easier because I have been using the grandMA ‘series 1’, but there are so many new things on the grandMA2 that make programming and operating my show much easier and quicker. Also having more faders allows me to lay out my cueing in a way that works much better for me.”
“I am a very hands-on ‘busking type’ of LD, I generally run the show old style, like we did on the classic Avo and Celco consoles, and the layout of the desk allows me to have my cue stack, but also have certain bumps on faders that I can grab and put in the programmer and actually write cues throughout the actual live show”, Wilson continued. “The fact that I can do a lot of things ‘on-the-fly’ really helps. It allows me to write cues in the heat of the moment and then come back the next day and clean them up. I am also very happy with both the speed and the stability of the console and look forward to each show day!”
Terry Cook of Woodroffe Bassett Design LLP is the project director, Dave Hill and Pryderi Baskerville work as programmers. Upstaging and Neg Earth deliver the lighting equipment.
